Historian Norman K. Dann debuts new book on Peter Smith, founder of Peterboro and the father of reformer Gerrit Smith.
Prolific historian Norman K. Dann will speak on his new book Peter Smith of Peterboro: Furs, Land, and Anguish on April 7, 2018, at the Madison County Historical Society in Oneida, N.Y. The event runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Fur trader and John Jacob Astor associate Peter Smith made a fortune, founded the village that bears his name, and fathered Gerrit Smith, who multiplied the fortune he inherited and generously refunded reform causes including abolition, woman suffrage, and dress reform.
