Coverage of Emma Goldman Greatly Expands

The Freethought Trail has greatly expanded its coverage of anarchist firebrand Emma Goldman, who lived in Rochester during her first years in America and often returned to the "Flower City" as a high-profile speaker on anarchism, sex radicalism, and culture.

Goldman left Rochester in 1889 and soon became a leading figure in the highly controversial anarchist movement. Goldman also advocated radical positions on sexuality, some of which became more conventional in later decades. Her 1917 deportation was one cause for the founding of the American Civil Liberties Union; by 1934 opinion of her had changed sufficiently that a group of liberal thinkers, authors, and other arts figures succeeded in persuading the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration to permit Goldman to return to the United States for a ninety-day speaking tour.

The research yielded some surprising finds. Did you know that downtown Rochester contains a Pentecostalist church with sculptures of two pagan gods on its facade?

The Freethought Trail now includes all the sites significant to Goldman's early years in Rochester, plus almost all of the sites where she spoke on her later visits to the city before and after her deportation and exile.

In addition, thirteen new Events pages were created, and nine new Site pages were created and two existing pages revised. A list of the relevant page links appears at the end of this release.
