The dental practice of Penn Yan freethinker Charles Elmendorf was located in a building on this site. Elmendorf continued to practice dentistry until shortly before his death in 1920 at the age of 91.
The Benham House, where he resided in his later years, stood about a block away at 151 Main Street. That building, too, is gone, having been demolished in 1960 to make way for a bank branch.
Charles Elmendorf's dental office occupied a previous building on the site of this small computer store.
During the years he lived at the Benham House, Charles Elmendorf enjoyed a very short commute. This photo, taken from the location of his dental practice, looks one block down Main Street. The Benham occupied the site of the boxy white bank branch, visible in front of the brick Post Office with fan-top windows.
