Matilda Joslyn Gage died on March 18, 1898. She had directed that her remains be cremated, a radical step in those days. Her ashes were interred beneath this bold tombstone.

The gravestone is inscribed, "There is a word sweeter than mother, home, or heaven. That word is liberty."
