On February 14, 1883, Matilda Joslyn Gage and her husband attended a return engagement at the Wieting Opera House in Syracuse of the play The Maid of Arran, the first successful musical by her son-in-law L. Frank Baum. Baum had composed the play's book, lyrics, and music and also played the lead role. He had based The Maid of Arran on the 1873 novel A Princess of Thule by Scottish author William Black (1841–1898). The play had premiered in Syracuse the year before at the Grand Opera House, going on to tour the country, including a run on Broadway.
